(Antwerp 1610–1690 Brussels)
Landscape with a castle and conversing men with an approaching storm, monogrammed illegibly lower left of centre: DT F, oil on panel, 43.5 x 64 cm, framed,
Provenance: old English private ownership (Cumbria).
This atmospherically close painting was probably executed in the late 1640s under the influence of the late landscapes of P. P. Rubens. It is comparable with a painting in the Dulwich Picture Gallery by Teniers, ‘A Castle and his Proprietors’. At the time Teniers was moving away from the genre of peasant painting and turning increasingly to landscape painting. This present painting is an excellent example of his ability to effectively portray light and the effects of weather.
